I truly feel like my work is a natural extension of my interests and personality. I am a discriminating thrifter and kind of geeky about natural textiles. Where do you see yourself in years? Look at art every day. My first major client was BE magazine. It really just depends! You are your own brand. Who is your favorite artist? I love what I do and hope to continue to do better and more in the future.
What was the most challenging project that you worked on? I dreamt of being an author like Margaret Binary option classes or a costume historian like Valerie Steele, and of course I was always drawing. How long does one drawing take? I think the project I am currently working on is the hardest project yet. I could see applying my illustrations to their brand. This may sound silly, but do your hands get tired? A dream job of mine would be to sketch at Fashion Week. A paper doll with a decent sized wardrobe is a couple weeks of work.
Who hires you? Promote your work through social media, join a sketch group, find a mentor — get out there! What are the biggest benefits of your job? Some are more like fine artists who sell their work in galleries or as prints.
A lot of it is just the logistics of seating a large crowd in a large venue. I actually have more clients from France. Even if you have an agent you still need to remember that you are working for yourself. Some are professors.
Some pieces take me very little time if the idea comes quickly and naturally. Right now, I always go to the Nike store in downtown Detroit. I have no idea, I never keep track. How did you first become interested in this line of work? I see myself doing exactly what I do now. I never know what my next project will be. How many hours a week do you work? I spend time with my guy, in the summer we like to garden. The biggest drawbacks? The industry is very competitive so you need to just go for it and give it your all.
To me, blogging is more like art than my illustration work. This was such a fun job and exactly what I love to do! How are your drawings used? I love how downtown Detroit has grown since I used to live down there during my CCS days back in I never even knew you could have a career like the one I have today.

I live in a shared apartment in a gentrified residential neighbourhood in Toronto, while my studio is nearby in a less gentrified neighbourhood. Can you tell us a bit more about the nuts and bolts of your job? Where do you get your inspiration? Thanks so much for sharing, Danielle!
I hope that more shops will come to downtown Detroit because there is nothing like shopping in a city setting! Many of my drawings are not useful, though some of the better ones are delightful. I cycle around the city, hang out with my friends.
I would also say that traveling has been a big part of my inspiration. During a live sketching event, I create custom illustrations for shoppers. Occasionally I will do a personal commission, if the client understands and appreciates my style and the subject has a fashion element. I also just finished a job for Roger Vivier, a French luxury shoe and handbag brand.
It has allowed me to stay at home with my babies and watch them grow into little girls. Who would you like to collaborate with in the future? What projects are you working on now or in the upcoming months? My hands get tired by the end of the event. I am much more discriminating than I can afford to be. Is it? Good question. Every week is different.
So, glamourous? The way you feel and think is revealed in the character of the lines you draw. I would also love to illustrate my own book, something based on fashion illustration, travel and lifestyle.
